Zwingen Castle

width="1400"

In 1248, the core structure of the moated castle was built under the direction of the Barons of Ramstein. In 1795, the property was sold to private owners in the wake of the turmoil of the Revolution. The Zwingen Paper Mill took over the castle in 1913, and its efforts likely played a significant role in preserving the structure.

The castle has been owned by the municipality of Zwingen since 1993. Even today, the entire complex is still surrounded by the Birs River. A gate tower with a crown of battlements dominates the eastern outer bailey. The original drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge. A covered wooden bridge connects the outer bailey to the main part of the complex.

A visit to the moated castle can be combined with a roughly three-hour hike for the whole family, which leads from Grellingen via Nenzlingen and Blauen to Zwingen. From Zwingen, you can easily take the S-Bahn back to the starting point in Grellingen. The castle is just a five-minute walk from the train station.
