Thierstein Castle

The Counts of Saugern-Pfeffingen founded the castle around the year 1100. Around 1300, a new building was constructed under the direction of the Counts of Thierstein. In 1522, the noble family died out, and the canton of Solothurn took over the castle. In 1894, the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) took over the property and built a clubhouse. The municipality of Büsserach purchased the castle after part of the ruins collapsed in March 1997 and restored it.
From the village of Büsserach, the castle is about a 20-minute walk away. You can combine a visit to the castle with a hike; for example, it takes about three and a half hours to walk from Büsserach to Breitenbach via Meltingen.
