Angenstein Castle

During the High Middle Ages, the castle served as an outpost for the Bishop of Basel and held significant strategic importance. The stately residence was devastated by a fire around the turn of the 16th century. Thanks to the bishop’s chancellor, Wendelin Zipper, the castle was restored beginning in 1560 in the style of a chivalric-romantic structure. Half-timbered buildings were added to the four-story residential structure.
During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the castle was plundered and destroyed once again by the Swedes. The building fell into disrepair until the city of Basel took it over in the 1980s, renovated it, and made it habitable. Access to the complex is limited due to its use as a residence.
Today, the castle chapel, the foyer, and the lower courtyard with its coach house are popular venues for festive occasions, cocktail receptions, and meetings.
