Alt Falkenstein Castle

width="1400"

Alt Falkenstein Castle is located between Oensingen and Balsthal, above the small town of Klus. In the 13th century, Count Rudolf von Nidau expanded the castle to include the current central wing and the round tower. At the same time, the town of Klus was founded. In 1402, Baron Hans II von Falkenstein sold the castle and the town of Klus to the city of Solothurn for 3,000 guilders. In 1923, the Feigenwinter heirs donated the castle to the canton of Solothurn. From 1923 to 1932, the tower—which had collapsed in 1922—was rebuilt, and the entire castle complex was renovated. In 1929, the Alt-Falkenstein Local History Museum was opened by the “Museums-Gesellschaft Thal-Gäu.”

Today, the castle houses the Alt-Falkenstein Local History Museum, which features the permanent exhibition “A Reflection of a Rich Past.”
