Pfeffingen Ruins

Toward the end of the 12th century, the hilltop castle passed into the hands of the Lords of Thierstein. They invested heavily in the site and expanded the complex to include a shield wall and a residential tower. The Lords of Thierstein declared the castle their official residence. The Diocese of Basel took over the castle after the family died out. In 1761, it was auctioned off to be demolished.
The ruins underwent extensive restoration by the Canton of Basel-Landschaft from 2013 to 2017. This already popular tourist destination was significantly enhanced.
There are fire pits and several places to rest on the castle grounds. The castle is located along the popular ViaJura hiking trail.
If you're traveling by car, follow the signs from the center of Pfeffingen up to the ruins. If you're traveling by public transportation, take the S3 to Dornach-Arlesheim and from there take the local bus to Pfeffingen Post. From there, the ruins—visible from far away—are about a 15-minute walk.
