Gilgenberg Ruins

Gilgenberg Castle is situated on a rocky ridge on the slope of the Geissfluh above Zullwil. The fortress was built in the 13th century by the Barons of Ramstein. At the dawn of the 19th century, the castle fell victim to an angry rural population. The ruins were misused as a quarry but remained well-preserved as a result.
In 1930, the masonry was restored, and in 1982, the five-story main hall was reinforced. The castle was subsequently designated a historic landmark.
From the village of Zullwil—or from the bus stop—the ruins can be reached in about 15 minutes via a marked hiking trail. There is parking available on site, and at the Palas, a picnic area with a fire pit invites visitors to linger.
