Mariastein Abbey is Switzerland’s second most important pilgrimage site after Einsiedeln. The historic complex, which is a designated historic landmark, dates back to the 14th century and is steeped in a legend according to which a child was saved by the Virgin Mary after falling off a cliff. A cave chapel was built on this spot, which was later maintained and expanded.

Today, visitors can discover the site’s eventful history through guided tours—including a tour of the monastery library—or by watching an impressive audio-visual presentation.
